Culture
The Palais du Tau preserves its 13th-century palace chapel and its 15th-century banqueting hall. It also houses the Museum of the Cathedral’s Works and Treasury, featuring outstanding pieces associated with the coronations of the French kings.
The Musée Saint-Remi presents important collections on the history of Reims and the region from prehistory to the Renaissance in 17 rooms, as well as an extensive section on military history. Its chapter house is a masterpiece of Romanesque art and houses around 30 small sculpted capitals created around 1130.
The Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix was designed and fully decorated by Léonard Foujita between 1965 and 1966. Foujita’s design combines Japanese culture with references to the Italian Renaissance. Léonard Foujita and his wife Kimiyo are buried in the chapel.
History
The map room of the Musée de la Reddition du 7 mai 1945 has been preserved in its original condition from May 1945 and offers an immersive sound and light experience.
The Porte de Mars is a monumental Roman arch built around the turn of the 2nd and 3rd centuries. It is considered the longest arch in the Roman world and is 6.4 metres high and 32.4 metres long.
Cityscape
The Halles du Boulingrin are among the rare examples of Reims architecture associated with modernism. They house a covered market, an organic market, a book market and a handicrafts market.
Local Character
The Saint-Nicaise Hill in Reims is one of three parts of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Hillsides, Houses and Cellars of Champagne”.
Le Cellier was built in 1898 for the Mumm Champagne house as a shipping cellar for bottles ready for dispatch. The building was restored and has housed cultural activities since 2015.
