Culture and History

Fort de Peigney is one of eight independent forts built to protect the city of Langres. The choir of Peigney Church has been listed in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments since 27 July 1921.

Peigney Church has a choir with a three-lancet window, a lavabo from the first half of the 13th century, a Eucharistic tabernacle from the beginning of the 16th century, and a painted and gilded iron rood beam from the 18th century.

Peigney has been documented as being inhabited by humans since 909 and is one of the oldest settled centres in the area. The Grande Fontaine was extensively redesigned after being rediscovered beneath the vegetation in the late 1980s and is considered the historic heart of the village, which originated around the spring in the Carolingian period.

Peigney was formerly known for its cheese. It was eaten fresh or used after maturing to make Langres cheese, and was sold at the fairs and markets of Langres.
