The Promenade des Remparts runs along one of the castle’s three former ring walls and leads around the upper part of today’s village. The medieval gatehouse of Montsaugeon dates from the late 15th century and is the only surviving part of the former castle fortifications.
Culture
The Church of Notre-Dame de Montsaugeon, also known as the chapel, is documented in a charter from 1098 and was rebuilt in the 13th century. Its interior can be visited by appointment with the town hall. A steep path leads from the cemetery to the former castle grounds; a stone altar with two niches on either side has been preserved there.
The Jardin d'Isabeau is a private garden with a medieval character. In this garden, the herbalist opens her shop and presents the remedies of her time. The Halles de Montsaugeon also reflect the site’s long history: they already existed in 1625 and were rebuilt in their present form at their historic location in 1761. In the 19th century, a market was held under the halls on Thursdays, along with four annual fairs. The halls are free of charge and freely accessible.
Landscape
Montsaugeon lies on the slope of an inselberg that reaches a height of 338 m. There is a pond at the foot of the inselberg; at the same time, the hill rises 60 m above the surrounding plain.
Trails
A 1.7 km-long discovery trail marked with information panels leads through Montsaugeon’s restored historic heritage. The discovery tour with Barthélémy is available via the free Id-Vizit app. The app offers personalised, entertaining and interactive sightseeing routes.
