Brienne-Le-Château: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Musée Napoléon in Brienne-le-Château is housed in a building of the former military academy of Brienne-le-Château, where Napoléon spent part of his youth. The museum also displays a treasury of 89 sacred works of art from churches in the Forêt d’Orient Regional Nature Park and its surroundings.

Culture

Today’s Château de Brienne was built from 1770 according to plans by the architect J. L. Fontaine, inaugurated on 25 August 1778, and completed with the artworks, paintings and sculptures in 1782. Because of its clear style, it is also known as “Le petit Versailles de l’Aube”. A statue created by Louis Rochet depicts Bonaparte at the age of 15 as he leaves the military academy.

The church of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul de Brienne-le-Château preserves architectural elements from the 12th to the 16th century and is predominantly Gothic. Notable Troyes grisaille stained-glass windows depict, among other things, the martyrdom of Saint Agatha and Noah’s Ark. The church can be visited independently every day.

The wooden market hall of Brienne-le-Château has been documented in written records since 1270. Old wooden pillars support an extensive roof; on Thursdays, it continues to host the market.

The Grands Lacs de Champagne tourist office in Brienne-le-Château offers guided city tours presenting the town’s remarkable cultural heritage. The grounds of the Château de Brienne are closed to the public for safety reasons. Some guided tours of the interior are offered by the Association de Sauvegarde du Patrimoine Briennois.

Nature

The Arboretum de Brienne-le-Château offers walking paths through diverse vegetation across almost 6,000 m². Notable tree species include the giant sequoia and the Chilean araucaria.

Hiking

The Promenade briennoise is an easy hiking trail approximately 8 kilometres long, with a walking time of around two hours. It begins at the Musée Napoléon at 34 rue de l’école militaire. Along the route, 62.7% of the trail runs on unpaved paths; it is marked in yellow.
