History and Culture

The first recorded mention of Suriacus appears in a charter issued by King Lothair in 956.

The Church of Saint George in Sury-aux-Bois dates from the 15th century and was remodelled several times over the centuries. During the French Revolution, it was temporarily used as a salt storehouse.

The Porte des seigneurs refers to thirteen noble landowning families who lived in Sury-aux-Bois between 1600 and 1800. The Saint-Georges fountain was apparently believed to possess powers that cured eye diseases.
