Nature and Trails
The Sentier Grand Méandre is an accessible nature trail in the Les Azins area along the Loire in Bou. Information boards and QR codes with audio explanations provide information about the local flora and fauna. The trail begins at La Binette, directly behind the car park.
The Sentier des Azins passes through sandy Loire grasslands in the meander of Bou, where several rare and protected species can be found. The very easy walking route is 6.9 kilometres long; the stated duration is 1 hour and 45 minutes.
The GR 3 runs through Bou along the Loire dyke. Boucle 17 – La Loire à Vélo par Chécy is a there-and-back route along the northern bank of the Loire that passes through Bou.
Île aux Oiseaux lies in the Loire meander of Bou between Bou and Sandillon. It can be visited from the Loire à Vélo route to observe black-headed gulls as well as little terns and common terns. The island is considered an area of ecological, faunal and floristic interest.
Culture and History
Among the attractions on the Sentier des Azins is the Maison de la distillation. It was established in the former cooperative distillery, which operated from 1920 to 1980. Since 2008, it has been an interpretation centre devoted to distillation, conveying the social and agricultural history of Bou. Still pots, vessels, the distillation boiler and explanatory panels can be seen there.
The Église Saint-Georges dates back to the late 11th century; in the 13th century it was extended into a larger building, and a visible roof structure dates from the 15th century. The church has a remarkable Romanesque bell tower and is partly classified as a historic monument and partly listed as a historic monument: the bell tower and choir were classified on 28 October 1922, while the nave and side aisles were listed on 7 March 1935.
Significant wine production took place in Bou until the beginning of this century; the wine-growing tradition is still honoured there today at the Fête Saint Vincent.
The Port de La Binette, also called Port de la Pointe du Loup in the 18th century, was historically Bou’s most important port and served as a waiting harbour for boatmen travelling towards Orléans. It remains lively; a small fleet built by locally committed residents takes part in numerous inland navigation events.
Festivals in Bou
The Fête à la Binette has been held regularly in Bou since 1946 and has become an important meeting place for street arts. During the festival, a wide variety of free street-art performances for all age groups are offered over two days.
