Saint-Germain-sur-Vienne is located in the Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Nature Park. Along the Vienne, houses made of tuff stone stand on the hillsides; the village also has several houses built into the rock.

Culture

The church of Saint-Germain-sur-Vienne has been listed as a historic monument since 1908. It has an unvaulted single-nave structure from the 11th and 12th centuries, incorporating elements of earlier foundations. It also has an Angevin Gothic choir, also known as “Plantagenêt”, with numerous ribs and carved keystones dating from the 13th century.

The Moulin de Rassay is also part of the local history: the grain mill of the Moulin-cavier type, built in 1845, has retained its truncated-conical tower. Another cultural venue is Chez les Artistes, a café-theatre-cabaret where visitors can enjoy drinks during small theatre performances.

Things to Do

The Saint-Germain-sur-Vienne circular hiking trail is 13.9 kilometres long and takes around three hours. It starts and ends at the church of Saint-Germain-sur-Vienne. There is a car park for the circular trail opposite the church, on the other side of the road.

Traditional boats, including Futeraux and Toues cabanées, are moored on the Vienne at Rassay. Grey herons, little egrets, common terns, white wagtails and kingfishers can be observed along the banks of the Vienne at Rassay. A kayaking trip is also offered as an activity for visitors in Saint-Germain-sur-Vienne.

The Château du Petit Thouars in Saint-Germain-sur-Vienne has been a family-owned wine estate since 1636 and belongs to the Chinon AOC. The Château du Petit Thouars offers tours and tastings at the estate. The Château du Petit Thouars also offers tasting excursions on the Loire and picnics in the vineyards.
