Saint-Genouph lies between the Loire and the Cher in an alluvial zone mainly devoted to vegetable growing and horticulture. Nearby, the Sentier des Varennes trail combines riverside scenery with historical sites: it offers views of the royal Loire and its islands, as well as the Grand Moulin de Ballan-Miré, built on the Cher during the reign of Francis I.

Anyone planning to rent a holiday apartment in Saint-Genouph thus has a specific travel destination in mind.

Culture and history

The church of Saint-Genouph was first built during the Romanesque period and rebuilt in 1899 by the architect Guérin on the foundations of the older church. Its exterior apse features grimacing heads known as modillions. One of the church windows depicts the “Woman with Five Knees”.

Notable historic buildings can also be found outside the town centre. The Manoir du Morier is located on the Cher, slightly below the dyke. Its entrance is flanked by two slender towers topped with small conical roofs covered in tiles. In the hamlet of Marsay stands a bourgeois residence dating from the 17th century. Human settlement in the Marçay district has been documented since the Bronze Age.

Riverside landscapes and nature

On the banks of the Loire, the Girouet of Saint-Genouph depicts a grey heron and a fish. At the Grand Moulin on the Cher, a fish pass enables migratory fish such as shad, lamprey and eel to make their way upstream.

Paths along the Loire and Cher

The Sentier des Varennes begins behind the church of Saint-Genouph and leads to the Loire dyke system. The easy walking trail has variants ranging from 5.2 to 6.7 kilometres in length.
