Huismes combines medieval religious architecture, châteaux and troglodytic traces with the diverse landscapes of the Bois Chétif. Those who choose Huismes as a destination would like to rent a holiday apartment here.

Culture and History

The Église Saint-Maurice dates from the 12th and 13th centuries and was restored in the 19th century. A 16th-century gallery connects the church with the Doyenné. Parts of the Église Saint-Maurice were classified as a Monument historique in 1913 and listed as a Monument historique in 1940.

The Château d'Usage comprises a residential building dating from the 15th century, which was enlarged in the first half of the 16th century. Its dovecote was converted into a chapel in the 19th century. The Château d'Usage and its park are listed in the Inventaire des Monuments Historiques.

Plum ovens can still be seen in Huismes: they were either built onto houses or dug into the tuff of troglodytic dwellings. The Château de la Villaumaire was built on Gallo-Roman foundations, mainly in the 15th century. A wash house in Huismes was faithfully restored by the current municipal administration.

The art studio and art repository of the Maison Max Ernst now host temporary exhibitions, conferences and concerts. The upper floor houses a documentation centre dedicated to artists.

Nature

The Bois Chétif nature reserve comprises departmental plots belonging to the dike system in the municipalities of Huismes, La Chapelle-sur-Loire and Avoine. On the Loire side, Bois Chétif consists of an alluvial forest with ash trees, black poplars and pedunculate oaks; on the Indre side lies one of the last bocage landscapes in Touraine.
