Culture and History
The Église Saint-Martin displays remarkable architectural details: the lower storey of its bell tower has three round arches on each side. The tower is flanked by a round stair turret and topped with an octagonal stone spire. In the nave, the church features masonry that may date back to the 10th century. The apse, the two subsidiary apses, the transept and the square bell tower date from the 12th century, while the entrance portal dates from the 15th century. The furnishings include an octagonal baptismal font made of white limestone with two carved stone masks. Since 19 September 1966, the Église Saint-Martin has been classified as a historic monument.
The Château de Bagneux is a château dating from the 13th to the 15th century, built on a limestone spur. The machicolations have been preserved on both surviving towers. According to tradition, the Château de Bagneux communicated with Loches or the Tour de Galles by means of fire signals. The château is privately owned and cannot be visited; however, its exterior architecture can be viewed from outside.
Bournan's historic heritage also includes a refuge tunnel. The network comprises approximately 150 metres of galleries. A high central gallery resembles an underground quarry, while narrow passageways are typical of refuge tunnels.
