The Cité des Climats et vins de Bourgogne in Chablis presents the history, cultural heritage and wine culture of the Chablisien, Grand Auxerrois and Châtillonnais regions in an immersive, multisensory visitor experience. The offering also includes a wine bar and activities throughout the year. Those choosing Chablis for their stay may wish to rent a holiday apartment.
Wine and culture
The Vinéa Passion Museum presents the wine-growing heritage of the Chablisien through the know-how and characteristic objects of viticulture and winemaking. It displays reconstructed soils from the wine-growing region as well as tools used for planting vines, viticulture and frost protection. A visit ends with a tasting of wines from the Ermitage Ste Vaubourg estate or grape juice for those who do not drink alcohol.
The Domaine Antoine et Laura Robin in Chablis also offers tastings of its cuvées with views of the Grands Crus.
Historic sites
The contemporary building of the Cité des Climats et vins de Bourgogne is connected to the historic Petit Pontigny complex. The buildings in this complex, dating from the 15th to the 18th century, were formerly the cellars of the monks of Pontigny Abbey.
The Obédiencerie is a building dating from the 15th to the 17th century that historically belonged to the chapter of the canons of Tours. The Collégiale Saint-Martin was built in 1160 and rebuilt from the 1220s onwards. The Church of Saint-Pierre is a Gothic building from the 12th and 13th centuries and was formerly the town’s only parish church.
At the western entrance to the town stands the Pressoir à abattage, an old wine press typical of the period from the 12th to the 16th century, which remains visible to everyone today. The Prieuré Saint-Cosme was built in the 12th century by Premonstratensian canons; it was originally fortified and protected by moats.
