Tancon: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The circular hiking trail “A la rencontre de la nature” begins and ends in Tancon (Le Bourg). It is signposted and classified as moderately difficult. Anyone planning a stay in Tancon may wish to rent a holiday apartment.

Nature and Trails

The Étang de Bouvier, also known as Borvi, covers more than 15 hectares. A path that is still accessible runs across the 340-metre-long dam.

History and Culture

The tower of the Château de Vertpré can still be seen from the section of the RD 383 road between Chauffailles and Charlieu. The Château de Vertpré stood at the bottom of the valley and was protected by larger bodies of water fed by the River Aaron, as well as by deep, flooded moats. It was demolished during the French Revolution in 1789.

The present-day church of Tancon was rebuilt in 1852, replacing a Romanesque chapel that had become too small for the growing Christian congregation. It has three naves, is designed in the style of the 13th century, and was built in 1852. In summer, Tancon church is decorated with floral displays.

Near the River Aaron at Les Landières is a prehistoric archaeological site where numerous roughly worked flint stones were discovered. The Abbaye Bénédictine de Charlieu monastery is located in the vicinity of Tancon.

The wider regional surroundings of Tancon include Château Saint Hugues, the historic site of Abbaye de la Bénissons-Dieu, the mountains Mont Saint-Rigaud, Mont Monnet and Mont Chonay, Grenet mountain, and the Église Saint-Hilaire de Semur-en-Brionnais church.
