Charolles combines fortified history with a living ceramics tradition that continues to this day. The fortified site stands on a rocky promontory surrounded by two rivers; a castle has been documented there since the 10th century. The Tour Téméraire was built between 1471 and 1474, is 27.50 metres high and has walls 2.10 metres thick. The Tour de diamant owes its name to the bossage masonry, a technique that could deflect artillery fire.

History
The town’s craft development is also part of its character. Manufacture de Charolles began in 1844, when Hippolyte Prost took over his father’s pottery workshop. It continues its work and preserves the cultural heritage of traditional ceramics production.

The Musée du Prieuré - Jean Laronze is housed in a former Cluniac priory founded in the 12th century and remodelled in the 15th and 16th centuries. The museum displays a complete collection of Charolles earthenware dating from 1844 to the present day. The former 19th-century chapel also contains works by the Charolais sculptor R. Davoine (1888–1962).
