Culture and History
The Musée Vivant Denon houses more than 25,000 archaeological objects as well as 11,000 sculptures, graphic works and ethnographic objects covering 100,000 years of history. The archaeological collection is significantly enhanced by underwater research in the Saône that is unique in Europe to date.
The Cloître des Chanoines at Cathédrale Saint-Vincent is the only surviving canonical cloister in Bourgogne and Franche-Comté. The Cathédrale Saint-Vincent complex comprises the former bishop's residence, the cathedral, the cloister and the canons' houses. Cathédrale Saint-Vincent was built from 1090 onwards in the Romanesque style and today features a Gothic elevation as well as a neo-Gothic façade.
The Musée Nicéphore Niépce is located in the former Hôtel des Messageries Royales, a building dating from the end of the 18th century on the banks of the Saône. It explains the development of photography from its invention by Nicéphore Niépce in 1827 to the digital image. Its collections include various devices, heliographic plates and personal items belonging to Nicéphore Niépce.
The Espace Patrimoine presents a permanent exhibition on the urban development of Chalon, beginning with the ancient Roman city of Cabilonnum. It also offers general and thematic guided tours, including visits to locations that are partly closed to the public.
