Pont-Royal combines a historic road route with the Canal de Bourgogne. The isolated road bridge of Pont-Royal was built in 1812 under the direction of engineer Charles Forey for the road from Dijon to Paris via Avallon. The Port de Pont-Royal was established in 1833 at the intersection of the Canal de Bourgogne and the road from Paris via Avallon. The bridge is part of the Port de Pont-Royal ensemble, comprising the nautical stop and the harbour basin on the Canal de Bourgogne.

Culture and History
The rectangular harbour basin of the Port de Pont-Royal bears traces of a former washhouse. The Pont-Royal toll house was built from 1835 onwards and completed in 1838. It stands on the right bank of the harbour, comprises a ground floor and two upper floors, and also served as a keeper's house. Since 1994, the Port de Pont-Royal has been illuminated at night by the permanent work “Eleven Columns of Light” by artist Michel Verjux.
