The Château d’Auxonne is the only one of the three castles built by Louis XI that is still preserved. The castles of Dijon and Beaune have been partially destroyed.
Culture and History
In 1479, Louis XI ordered the construction of the Château d’Auxonne as one of three fortified castles intended to monitor the Burgundians, who had recently come under the rule of the Duchy of Burgundy, and the border with the Holy Roman Empire. The arsenal of Auxonne was built by Vauban in 1689.
The Église Notre-Dame in Auxonne was built gradually between the 13th and 16th centuries and is the city of Auxonne’s most important building. Visitors can climb the 169 steps to the top of its tower and enjoy extensive views of the surrounding area, as well as the architectural monuments of the city and its surroundings.
The Musée Bonaparte, with its collections on Bonaparte’s stay as an artillery lieutenant from June 1788 to June 1791, is currently closed until further notice.
Geographical Location
Auxonne is located on the Franche-Comté TER railway line, which connects Dijon, Dole and Besançon.
The Saône and the Voie Bleue
The Voie Bleue is an 80 km-long, signposted cycle path along the Saône; two routes can be accessed from Auxonne. The Auxonne–Talmay section runs along the fortifications and the marina of Auxonne.
In Auxonne, the Saône provides the setting for boating and water sports. The nautical nature trail offers an approximately one-hour family outing that combines nature and history.
Etoile Auxonnaise rents out windsurf boards, catamarans and Optimist dinghies, and offers courses for children in summer.
The Saône is designated as a second-category fishing waterway from the confluence of the Montarlot stream with the Saône to the Apremont lock. This includes the Rigny–Apremont diversion canals, as well as the section from kilometre point 270 to the confluence with the Echalonge stream, including the section of the Saône diversion between the Apremont lock and the confluence with the Saône.
