Échalot: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Culture and history

Originally, the church served as the castle chapel of a former fortress in Échalot dating from the 12th century. The remains of the fortress demolished by Henry IV include two large towers and part of the moat, which was filled with water, on the site. Today, the church houses holy images by Marie de Blic.

Charles de Foucauld also visited Échalot during his stays in the Côte-d'Or. The Abbaye d'Oigny, an abbey, is also located in the vicinity of Échalot. In the wider region are the Grand prieuré du Val-des-Choux, a historic site, the Abbaye de Saint-Seine, an abbey, and the Château de Vantoux, a château.

Nature and landscape

The “Ruisseau de Crusille et marais de Fossilière” area in Étalante and Échalot is designated as a type I continental ZNIEFF. It forms a narrow valley, characterised by meadows in its downstream section and more heavily forested in its upstream section. The area is home to the marsh helleborine (Epipactis palustris), an orchid that is rare in Burgundy and protected by law.

The Marais de la Lochère features tuff moorland habitats, which are considered to be of high ecological importance in north-eastern France. Mont Mercure, a hill, is located in the vicinity of Échalot.

The wider region around Échalot includes Le Haut des Lavières, a hill, the Côte de Soucy, a hill, and Le Maumont, a hill. A modern château in Échalot overlooks the pond where the River Le Brevon rises.

Cycling

Circular route no. 22, “Les sources de la Coquille”, leads to Échalot along a wooded road.
