Culture and History
The former Notre-Dame church in Vertaizon preserves a building with several historical layers. It was built in the 11th century from arkose on the foundations of the castle chapel. The ruined Romanesque nave with its square pier bases and two arcades has been preserved; the choir dates from the late 13th century and was built in the Gothic style. The crypt and the north portal of the former church have also been preserved, while the choir, the two side chapels and the bell tower remain intact. In 1926, the former Notre-Dame church was added to the inventory of Historic Monuments, and in 1982 it was classified as a Historic Monument.
A feudal castle stood on Vertaizon’s volcanic cone in the 10th century. From there, its lord could monitor the Allier Valley and the Limagne plain. Part of Vertaizon’s fortified area, with four round towers, has been preserved on the northern side.

Nature and Trails
The Puy de Mur is associated with Vertaizon; 325.6 hectares there are designated as an “Espace Naturel Sensible d’Initiative Locale” (Local Initiative Sensitive Natural Area). On the Puy de Mur stands a feudal motte enclosed by a surrounding wall; the enclosure is approximately 1.5 km long. The Puy de Mur is also home to the Romanesque Sainte Marcelle Chapel.
Marked Routes
The marked trail “Autour du puy de Mur” begins in Vertaizon. The marked circular route “Autour du puy de Mur” is 14 km long and has six thematic panels on fauna, flora, rural heritage, archaeology, geology and natural habitats. Another route, “Le puy de Pileyre”, passes through Vertaizon.
