Le Pidgier is a “young” volcano that is six million years old. The numerous scree slopes of Mont Pidgier bear witness to lava at its summit, which solidified and later broke up on the slopes through erosion and the passage of time.

Culture and History
The present-day Église de Saint-Hostien was built in the Neo-Romanesque style at the beginning of the 19th century. Its ten stained-glass windows were created in 1919 by the workshop of Charles Borie. The detached, hexagonal bell tower is considered to be the oldest surviving structure; it was rebuilt at the beginning of the 18th century because of the unstable ground conditions.
Located on the outskirts of Saint-Hostien, the Château de Champ dates back to the Middle Ages. Between Le Puy-en-Velay and Yssingeaux, near the Col du Pertuis, it served as a strategic control point.

PR253 Le Pidgier is a moderately difficult, 6.0 km hiking trail with a walking time of around two hours and 187 m of ascent and descent respectively.
PR253 Le Pidgier is a family-friendly walking trail through the forests on Mont Pidgier. A clearing at the summit offers a wide panorama of the Sucs of Meygal and Emblavez. The trail begins and ends in L'Hermet in the municipality of Saint-Hostien.

The mountains Mont Plaux, Mont Chanis, Jaurence and Peylenc are each located in the immediate vicinity of Saint-Hostien. The surrounding area also includes the ruins of the Abbaye de Bellecombe, the Fortresse de Polignac castle and the Monument Statue Notre-Dame-de-France.
