Culture and History
The Cluniac Priory of Sainte-Croix was founded in 1025 by Odilon de Mercœur, the fifth abbot of Cluny. The priory’s original Romanesque church was replaced in the 15th century by a large Gothic building; the convent buildings were largely rebuilt in the 18th century.
The Gothic church houses a polychrome Romanesque wooden Christ dating from the 12th century. The medieval bridge is also part of the townscape: it connects the two districts of Lavoûte-Chilhac and was probably built in the 15th century.
The numerous traboules in the historic district connect lanes, houses and the banks of the Allier, offering a unique way to explore the town on foot. The Notre-Dame-Trouvée tradition is marked by a pilgrimage on the first Sunday in July.
