Mauriac is home to a long history of sacred architecture, represented by the Basilique Notre-Dame-des-Miracles. Construction of the basilica began in the 12th century. On 20 October 1921, by decree of Pope Benedict XV, the Église Notre-Dame-des-Miracles was elevated to the status of a minor basilica. The basilica houses a miraculous Black Madonna that has been venerated since the Middle Ages. The building is considered the most significant Romanesque structure in the Cantal département and the département’s only basilica.

Culture

The Monastère Saint-Pierre also spans several historical periods. Its history took shape in the 9th century with the construction of an abbey church and the monastic buildings, followed later by the deanery. Archaeological excavations provide evidence of a 9th-century church and brought a chapter house from the 11th century back to light. Guided tours take visitors through the various periods of the monastery’s history.

The Musée de Mauriac is housed in former outbuildings of the Monastère Saint-Pierre. Following the Revolution, these served as the town’s prisons until 1951. During the summer season, the Musée de Mauriac presents temporary exhibitions. At the Puy Saint-Mary, the tradition of a fair held on 8 June also continues.

Nature

Le Val Saint-Jean is located on the outskirts of Mauriac, around a body of water covering approximately 9 hectares. There are walking paths, signposted routes for hiking or jogging, a fitness trail and an aqua leisure centre.

The Puy Saint-Mary is a former volcanic vent overlooking the town of Mauriac. The Chapelle du Puy Saint-Mary was rebuilt on the foundations of a medieval chapel that had been built by monks from the Monastère Saint-Pierre.
