Massiac: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Église Saint-André in Massiac houses a folding statue of the Virgin Mary from the 14th century; there are around thirty examples of this type worldwide. The church also displays a Madonna in Majesty from the 15th century.

Culture

The Musée d’art Elise Rieuf displays works by seven female painters of the 20th century. It is located in the former stables of a château, which is why it has a vaulted ceiling.

Elise Rieuf travelled through Europe in search of images, spent three years in China and came to the landscapes of her native Auvergne to recuperate.

History and Landscapes

The Chapelle Sainte Madeleine is a Romanesque chapel from the 12th century and formerly belonged to the now-vanished castle complex. It towers above Massiac and offers a viewpoint over the town and the Allagnon Valley. The chapel is open daily year-round and access is free. Every year around 22 July, the feast day of Saint Madeleine, a pilgrimage takes place at the Chapelle Sainte Madeleine.

The Palhàs are former terrace cultivations on the slopes of Massiac that were once used to grow grapevines, fruit trees and aromatic plants. They were restored from 2000 to 2004 and can be explored via an interpretation trail.

Local Products and Produce

Markets are held in Massiac every Saturday evening in summer; they are also known as Samed’ici.

La Coquille de Massiac offers tastings of products from its own production. The business operates a snail farm with 200,000 snails, from egg-laying through to preparation.

Trails and Activities

The Via Arverna, a variant of the main route to Santiago de Compostela, begins in the Cantal at Massiac and ends in Laroquebrou after seven stages.

The Centre de tourisme équestre de Chalet offers horseback rides and excursions in nature with horses and ponies. The Alagnon near Massiac offers anglers clear water with trout and grayling.
