Montgreleix is a stage village on the Tour des Vaches Rouges circular hiking trail, which is also called the Tour du Cézallier. The stage from Montgreleix to Égliseneuve-d’Entraigues is 12.4 kilometres long and takes 3 hours 30 minutes. It is described as the easiest of all the stages and runs downhill apart from the final kilometre.
Sancy Tour No. 16 offers views of the Massif du Sancy and the Monts du Cantal. The 2.5-hour hike leads through the summer pastures and extensive meadows of the Cézallier. On Sancy Tour No. 16, visitors can also discover Montgreleix’s traditional craft knowledge.
Landscape and Water
Lac des Estives is a three-hectare lake bordered by a fir forest on its upper side. It contains rainbow trout, brown trout, brook char and some trophy trout. The fly-fishing reservoir at Lac des Estives is available to anglers all year round.
Culture and History
The Église Saint Laurent in Montgreleix was rebuilt after the fire of 1884 and has a polychrome Baroque retable altar. A guided tour of Montgreleix covers the history of the village from the Neolithic period to the First World War and also includes a tour of the church.
