Cheylade: Holiday apartments and houses

In Cheylade stands the Château d’Escorolles, a fortified house that probably dates from the 13th century and was built from basalt – a volcanic material characteristic of the Cantal’s defensive towers. Its 20-metre-high tower has a spiral staircase and a dovecote; a parapet walk is located at its top.

As the Château d’Escorolles is currently dilapidated and uninhabitable, only visits to the garden and the ascent of the tower, offering a view of the roof timbers, are currently available.

Culture

The Église Saint-Léger was built in several major construction phases in the 12th, 15th and 16th centuries. Its nave contains 560 painted coffered panels, with a further 400 in the side aisles. All are decorated with naïve depictions of flowers, fantastic animals and angels, as well as the coats of arms of local families.

In the vicinity of Cheylade is the Château de la Borie, a château. In the wider regional surroundings of Cheylade lies the Château de Massebeau, also a château.

Nature

The mountain Suc de Rochemonteix is located in the immediate vicinity of Cheylade. The surrounding area also includes the mountain Puy de Niermont, the mountain Rocher de l'Aygue and the mountain Suc Gros.

Paths and water

The Chemin des Quiroux leads from Dienne to Cheylade across a plateau covered with stone heaps. The stone heaps, placed approximately every 20 metres, served as orientation points for travellers in bad weather.

At the Cascade du Sartre, visitors can immerse themselves in the interior of the waterfall with the help of a spherical metal structure as well as observation and sensory discovery equipment. Telescopes and listening modules are available there, allowing visitors to experience the atmosphere of the site. The interpretation trail at the Cascade du Sartre provides information about local tree species and the site’s natural heritage.

Trout fishing and pedal boating are possible at Lac des Cascades.
