Culture and History

The medieval town of Montluçon was protected by a town wall with 40 towers and four gates; its narrow streets are lined with beautiful half-timbered houses. With the “100% Patrimoine” guidebook available from the tourist office, visitors can explore the medieval town independently.

The Église Saint-Paul has metal domes on cast-iron supporting structures. Guided tours are available on request; groups must make a reservation.

MuPop

MuPop in Montluçon is France’s first museum dedicated to the history and objects of music. Covering more than 3,300 m², it presents popular music from the 18th century to the 1990s. The museum features 150 listening systems with musical worlds ranging from jazz and rock to Bal Musette and pop music, as well as 34 hurdy-gurdies. Gardens and Paths

The freely accessible Jardin Wilson is located in the historic centre of Montluçon and offers a clearly structured setting with beautiful trees and shrubs. The medieval town walls found there have been protected as a historic and picturesque site since 1952.

The Parc de la Louvière includes a Wallace fountain complex and a basin. The Parc de la Villa Louvière is decorated with sculptures and an aviary and combines French and English garden styles. The orangery in the Parc de la Villa Louvière hosts temporary exhibitions.

The former towpath of the Canal de Berry between Montluçon and Vallon-en-Sully is reserved for non-motorised traffic on foot, by bicycle, with a pushchair or by scooter.

Events and Market

The Centre des cultures et congrès Athanor offers a diverse programme for all audiences, including theatre and concerts. It has 10,000 m² of flexibly usable event space. At the farmers’ market on the Parvis des Centre Athanor, cheese, honey, mushrooms and stone-ground flour are available.
