Water and Circular Routes
The Étang de Pirot was created between 1842 and 1852 on the Marmande as a reservoir for the Canal de Berry and is currently used for fishing. The 7.7 km Circuit de l’Étang de Pirot circular walk is a hiking trail near Les Ecossais in Isle-et-Bardais, starting in Isle-et-Bardais. It runs close to the water and allows visitors to observe diverse fauna at the 78-hectare Étang de Pirot.
The 19 km Circuit de La Rigole hiking trail starts in the Le Bourg district of Isle-et-Bardais. It connects the two reservoirs of the Canal de Berry, the Étang de Pirot in Isle-et-Bardais and the Étang de Goule in Valigny, via a small connecting canal called La Rigole.
History
Systematic excavations at the Petits Jardins site in Isle-et-Bardais between 2002 and 2014 uncovered an ancient place of worship with two temples. The Petits Jardins archaeological complex also included an adjacent building with a forge. After the sanctuary was abandoned, tilemakers built their kilns in the ruins of one of the temples in the Early Middle Ages and produced Roman-style tiles there.
