Culture and History
The Church of Saint Laurent was built on the site of a Carolingian-era ecclesia dating from the 7th to the 10th century and was dedicated to Saint Lawrence in 1511. Its features include stained-glass windows from the Mauméjean workshops.
The old tower of Pontacq and the adjoining remains of fortifications from the 14th and 15th centuries were entered in the register of historic monuments on 20 July 1945. The Tower of Pontacq rises above the remains of a fortification wall made of rounded stones.
The Maison d’Estibayre estate is also connected with the town’s history: it was recorded in 1385 during the general survey of the houses of the Viscounty of Béarn. Today, a statue of the Pontacq goose stands on Place du Barry; the goose also appears on the town’s coat of arms.
The Moulin Capdevieille is one of the oldest mills in Pontacq.
