Culture and History

The protohistoric camp and earthwork complex in Macaye were listed as a historic monument on 31 October 1980. They are located in the districts of Olhamendy and Mocorreta and are classified as an archaeological site and camp. The Church of Saint-Étienne in Macaye dates from the 17th century and features a bell tower with a front gable, a porch paved with gravestones, three galleries, and an altarpiece in the Louis XIV style.

Chestnuts and Local Produce

The Maison de la Châtaigne Basque in Macaye welcomes individual and group visitors throughout the year by prior reservation. Visitors can learn about the history of the chestnut and buy and taste products there. Throughout the year, the Maison de la Châtaigne Basque offers walks through chestnut groves as well as seasonal workshops on harvesting and peeling chestnuts. Locally harvested chestnuts are processed into flour, semolina, chestnut cream, biscuits, and tagliatelle. The Maison de la Châtaigne Basque is located at Dép. 119, Chemin d'Agerria, 64240 Macaye, France.

The farm visit offered by Onetik lasts two hours and ends with a tasting in the boutique. Every Thursday in July and August from 10 a.m., Onetik offers farm visits; departure is from the cheese dairy. Onetik also offers Basque cheeses made in Macaye as well as a range of local food products.

Hiking and Baigura

Makea Oinez was founded in 2000 by residents of Macaye and is organised in partnership with the Base de loisirs Baigura. Makea Oinez takes hikers on a day trip to discover the Baigura and Ursuia mountains.

The Baigura massif reaches an elevation of 897 metres and is suitable for hiking; various routes can be requested at the reception. The Base de loisirs du Baigura was created by the municipalities of Mendionde, Macaye, and Hélette and offers tandem paragliding flights.
