Culture and history

The Biarritz lighthouse has 248 steps leading to the viewing platform and the upper area. From there, the 360-degree view extends across the beaches of Landes, the Basque coast and the Pyrenees as far as Spain. The Biarritz lighthouse has been listed as a historic monument since 2009 and remains in operation.

The Rocher de la Vierge is a popular spot among locals and visitors for walks and takes its name from the statue on its summit. The Aquarium de Biarritz has been housed in an Art Deco building opposite the Rocher de la Vierge since 1933.

The Port des Pêcheurs is a small historic cove below the Plateau de l’Atalaye and recalls Biarritz’s maritime past. The Crampottes at the Port des Pêcheurs were established at the beginning of the 20th century for storing fishing equipment and salting sardines.

The Musée Historique de Biarritz is located in the former St Andrew’s Anglican Church, built in 1878. It houses a collection of 4,000 objects, works of art and rare documents tracing the city’s historical development.

The Cité de l’Océan offers interactive exhibitions and virtual-reality experiences such as “Surf Sensation 5D” and “Virtual Surf”. It also presents exhibitions and educational activities on marine biodiversity.

Nature

Lac Marion is a 20-hectare leisure and recreation area suitable for families; 5 hectares of it consist of water surfaces.
