Castelculier: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Notre-Dame de Cabalsaut is located in the peaceful Roucal Valley, less than five minutes from Castelculier town centre. The Romanesque church has capitals on its six columns depicting hungry monsters, fantastic animals and floral motifs. Notre-Dame de Cabalsaut was designated a historic monument in 1926 and restored in 2007; the site can be viewed from outside all year round.
Culture and History
Only ruins of Castelculier Castle remain after it was destroyed in 1634 on the orders of King Louis XIII. The Route de Roland, which connects Rocamadour with Roncevaux, also passes through Castelculier.
The archaeological garden of the Villa of Lamarque, Villascopia, displays the excavated and enhanced southwest wing of the living quarters of a villa; the living rooms adjoin a significant private thermal bath complex. The 4th-century baths comprise a 970-square-metre private thermal bath complex, considered the largest discovered to date in Aquitaine. The archaeological garden is open daily from 09:30 to 17:30 and admission is free.
Saint-Amans is a Romanesque church with an arcade bell tower and a well-preserved Romanesque portal with three archivolts. The parish church of Saint-Amans is believed to have been built in the 12th century.
Hiking and Craftsmanship
An 11-kilometre hike offering views of the Garonne Valley starts at Saint-Amans Church. “Vannerie d'art – Et si vous'osier!” offers individual or group basket-weaving workshops.
Anyone who has Castelculier with Notre-Dame de Cabalsaut in view will want to rent a holiday apartment there.
