Tartas lies on the border between Grande-Lande and Chalosse. The Midouze, a tributary of the Adour, forms a natural boundary between the two landscapes near Tartas: extensive pine forests lie on one side, while hilly landscapes stretch across the other.

Landscape and Water

The Ous Pins body of water near the equestrian centre covers three hectares. It offers opportunities for walking and relaxing, as well as for observing geese, ducks and possibly European pond turtles.

Tartas is divided into the Lower Town, characterised by quays and riverbanks, and the Upper Town, characterised by its cultural heritage.

In July and August, canoe trips on the calm waters of the Midouze are possible from Tartas.

The farmers' and arts and crafts market on Saturday mornings brings together local producers and craftspeople.

Culture

The present-day Church of Saint James was built between 1849 and 1854 and classified as a historic monument in 1999. Its architecture, interior design and furnishings make it one of the finest regional examples of 19th-century religious art.

The Maison dite de Jeanne d'Albret was the residence of the lieutenant generals of the Sénéchaussée de Tartas at the beginning of the 17th century under Louis XIII. The building has an L-shaped floor plan and three storeys and is listed as a historic monument.

Activities

The Ous Pins equestrian centre is located on a 30-hectare natural site and offers riding lessons as well as trail rides for beginners and experienced riders.

The 51-kilometre, very difficult gravel loop route „Circuit de la forêt, la chapelle de Suzan, les sources guérisseuses et le chemin de halage de la Midouze“ starts at the Allées marines car park in Tartas and heads towards the Centre équestre d'Ous Pins.
