Taller combines a fortified church, historic buildings and paths through the Landes forest. The Saint-Barthélémy church was built in the 13th century. Its fortifications are evident in the loopholes in the southern façade of the nave, the tower belfry and the massive form of the square bell tower.
Culture and History
In the town centre, near the church on the banks of the Palue, stands the washhouse of Taller. It was probably built in the 19th century and has an oval basin made of smoothed concrete, whose shape is unique in the Landes département. The washhouse is no longer used, continues to be supplied with water and is maintained as a reminder of the past.
Another historic feature is the Salle des réunions, an Art Nouveau building erected around 1910 by the architect Pomade. Opposite the church stands the former Art Deco presbytery, which also has a memorial plaque honouring Abbé Victor Doussy.
Until 1920, a procession took place on 30 April or on the following Sunday from the church to the Fontaine Saint Eutrope. The spring has been documented since 1863; historically, people sought help there from Saint Eutrope for rheumatism.
Paths and Landscape
Taller lies in the heart of the Landes forest and along a section of the Via Turonensis, a pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. The Lo Camin de Hè circular trail is 9.5 km long, can be completed on foot or by bicycle and passes through pine forest.
The green route Lo Camin de Hè, Gascon for “Le Chemin de Fer”, follows the former Landes railway line between Vielle-Saint-Girons and Taller and passes through Linxe and Castets. The Circuit du Patrimoine de Taller complements these routes with nine stops showcasing the local heritage; each stop is presented on an information board.
