Culture and History
A church called “Sancta Maria de Lane” is documented in the cartulary of Sorde Abbey for the period between 1105 and 1119. The Église Sainte-Madeleine dates from the 13th and 16th centuries. Its 13th-century Gothic architectural style is considered rare in the rural areas of the Landes and Pyrénées-Atlantiques.
Port-de-Lanne was formerly an important stopping point for river trade between Gascony and the port of Bayonne. The Musée de la batellerie et de la pêche is connected with this history: it focuses on the history and particular features of commercial shipping and professional fishing in Port-de-Lanne. The museum includes boats, nets, photographs, and other old objects and documents. Visits to the Musée de la batellerie et de la pêche are only possible by prior arrangement and for groups of at least ten people.
Landscape and Nature
The maritime Adour meets the Pyrenean Gaves at Bec-du-Gave, a few hundred metres south of Port-de-Lanne. The Barthes de l’Adour are designated as a Natura 2000 site.
Getting Around
The 11-km Circuit entre Adour et Saint Etienne d’Orthe can be used on foot and by mountain bike. The Circuit entre Adour et Saint Etienne d’Orthe also offers good opportunities for observing marsh birds.
