Ossages: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Landscape and Nature

Two streams bordered the hill of Ossages to the north and south; in the past, they were an important source of wealth for the village. They enabled the development of nine watermills in Ossages.

There are numerous springs and wells within the municipality. Near them, as well as along the many streams, willow trees shelter several species of ferns and horsetails.

Oak, pine and acacia forests in Ossages provide a habitat for deer. Different types of soil shape the municipality, including iron-rich sands, silts and clays, which were formerly used to make roof tiles.

Two-thirds of the municipality is used mainly for maize fields and pasture; in recent years, occasional kiwi orchards have been planted there. In clear weather, visitors in Ossages can see the Pyrenees mountain range with La Rhune and even the Pic du Midi.

Culture and History

The Sainte-Madeleine parish church in Ossages was completely restored in 1890. It has an elongated floor plan and a square tower with an octagonal slate roof. Its possible furnishings include an altarpiece of the Virgin dating from the final decades of the 18th century, Neoclassical altars, a confessional and choir stalls from the first half of the 19th century, as well as a baptismal font, pulpit and a bell dating from between 1880 and 1910, cast in 1901 by G. Delestan.

In Ossages, visitors can discover old residential buildings and historic farmhouses. The ancient Roman camp of Beyré de Baigt is considered a place worth discovering.
