Plassac: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

At the heart of Plassac lies the archaeological site, which is classified as a historic monument. It comprises the remains of three major construction phases of a Gallo-Roman villa built between the 1st and the 4th or 5th century AD. The third construction phase dates from the late 4th and early 5th centuries AD; at that time, the villa was decorated with polychrome mosaic floors from the Aquitaine school.

Culture

The permanent Mosaïque Tour in Plassac now includes ten mosaics that are visible to everyone. The easy circular route is 1.5 kilometres long and takes approximately 45 minutes to one hour on foot. At the Babylon Mosaic workshop, visitors are introduced to the tools, techniques and materials of mosaic art; some can try cutting marble with a martelline and tranchet.

The museum at the archaeological site presents a virtual 3D reconstruction of the villa from the 2nd century. The panels on the ground floor explain the history of the site and the successive construction phases of the ancient villa. One of the museum walls also displays a reconstruction of several panels featuring ancient wall paintings.

The Musée des Amis du Vieux Plassac is located in an outbuilding of the former presbytery and is run by the association Les Amis du Vieux Plassac. It presents archaeological finds from the excavations of the villa, including pottery, metal objects and coins.

The local history also includes the Église Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens. It was rebuilt in 1883, while its bell tower and entrance portal from the late 18th century were preserved. The church was built on part of the Gallo-Roman villa. It houses the relics of Saint Fructose and a statue of Notre-Dame de Montuzet. It also has a Stations of the Cross painted on metal in the 19th century, as well as a 19th-century red marble baptismal font.

The house known as Maison de Fombertaud, next to the museum, already existed in 1789. One of its special features is a well built into a large room on the ground floor.

Paths and Landscape

Four signposted routes are available in Plassac. Occasional commentary provides information about local history, geography and architectural heritage. Around two hours should be allowed for the 4.5-kilometre Boucle Nord-Est.

A walking path in Plassac follows part of the Voie de Tours, a route to Santiago de Compostela. One hiking route leads to the banks of the Gironde, the marina and the surrounding hillsides. It includes shaded paths, vineyard landscapes and beautiful viewpoints around the Vierge de Montuzet.

Island and Harbour

The ÃŽle Verte is located in the municipality of Plassac. It was once home to a wine-growing village with a school, chapel, water tower and a small railway for viticulture.

The Port de Plassac has 44 berths for recreational boating and 22 jetties providing access to the boats.

Family

Terra Aventura offers a smartphone treasure hunt in the old village of Plassac: using a free app, participants solve puzzles that lead to a hiding place. Terra Aventura is considered a playful way to discover the region's heritage and is suitable for encouraging children to go hiking.
