Cadillac: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

The Château ducal de Cadillac contains an unusual chapter of French history: later, in the 19th century, the Château ducal de Cadillac became France’s first women’s prison.

Renting a holiday apartment in Cadillac is one possible form of personal travel planning.

Culture and history

The Château ducal de Cadillac was built from 1599 onwards under Henri IV and Louis XIII as one of the early examples of French architecture. To this day, it preserves monumental fireplaces and almost 40 historic tapestries. The Château ducal de Cadillac-sur-Garonne is located in the vicinity of Cadillac.

The historic buildings include the Porte de la Mer, which was built from 1315 onwards. On the rear side, loopholes and machicolations of its original fortifications are visible. The Porte de l’Horloge dates from the early 14th century and has four levels with loopholes above a passage accessed via a drawbridge; it was originally called Porte Vernihaut.

Remembrance

The Cimetière des Oubliés was established in 1923 for soldiers of the First World War who died in Cadillac-sur-Garonne after their internment and as a result of war trauma. The cemetery has a memorial and interpretation area with texts, images, and audio and visual projections. An interactive panel provides information about the people buried there.

From Monday to Friday, the Cimetière des Oubliés is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; outside these hours, it can be accessed via the municipal cemetery.

Wine

The Cadillac AOP takes its name from the bastide of Cadillac and comprises sweet white wines from the Gironde department.

River and cycling

The port of Cadillac offers moorings on the Garonne for river cruise ships. From the moorings there or from the river cruise ships docked there, visitors can explore heritage sites and vineyards in Entre-deux-Mers, Graves, and Sauternais.

The “Iconiques à vélo: le château ducal de Cadillac-sur-Garonne” cycle route follows the Garonne along hilly secondary roads through Entre-Deux-Mers and provides access to the bastide and the Château de Cadillac.

To the overarching travel overview: Gironde.
