Culture and History
The present-day Église Saint-Saturnin replaced a medieval Romanesque parish church and was built between 1864 and 1868. At the Église Saint-Saturnin, the choir faces west. Botanical decorations can be found on the capitals, corbels, keystones and the portal archivolts; the exterior brackets and the gallery balustrade are ornamented with geometric designs. The church also has a rose window depicting its benefactors.
Pierre Laffitte, a student and successor of Auguste Comte, was born in Béguey on 21 February 1823. A statue stands in his honour on the square named after Pierre Laffitte, opposite his former home.
Along the Chemin de l’embarcadère, houses dating from the 16th century lead down to the former port of Béguey. The gate of the Clos du Peyran bears the inscription “Que Dieu Protège Son Long Parcours”; it belongs to an 18th-century manor house once owned by a captain in long-distance shipping.
