The Ill River is part of Horbourg-Wihr’s natural surroundings. Along the Ill and a branch of the Grand Canal d’Alsace, this natural setting is suitable for hiking, cycling and canoeing. Six circular cycling routes provide access to Horbourg-Wihr, Colmar and its conurbation.
The Route Verte was created in 1960 on the initiative of Joseph Rey, the mayor of Colmar at the time. It passes through Horbourg-Wihr and, as a cross-border route, connects Lorraine, Alsace and the Pays de Bade. Horbourg-Wihr is also a member of the tourist and cultural route “European Cultural Route Heinrich Schickhardt”.
Culture and Everyday Life
The Église Saint-Michel has Romanesque origins, reflected in its square 14th-century bell tower. It houses 16th-century murals depicting the life of Saint Margaret, as well as the four Evangelists and the Church Fathers.
Some former manorial farmsteads in Horbourg-Wihr date back to the 17th century and feature large round-arched gateways with an emblem. ARCHIHW organizes several conferences and cultural excursions every year.
At Horbourg-Wihr’s Saturday market on the Place du 1er Février, every Saturday morning from 8 a.m. to noon, there are, among others, stalls run by florists, wine merchants, winegrowers, caterers, butchers, vegetable growers and beekeepers.
Structures
Construction work on the Pont de l’Ill, which connects Colmar and Horbourg-Wihr, began in 1770. The Pont de l’Ill is a river structure clad in dressed stone and is considered one of the region’s significant river structures.
The Pont des Américains remains the only bridge of its kind in Alsace. As a historic bridge, it originated from an assembly of structural components transported by Allied ships, intended to serve as a landing ramp on June 6, 1944, and repurposed for civilian construction after the war.
