Grentzingen: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Grentzingen’s character is particularly evident along the Ill: the road through the village runs parallel to the river and reveals a distinctive ensemble of buildings, most of which date from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Culture and History

At the centre is the present-day parish church of Saint-Martin. It was built from 1782 onwards and completed in 1784. The building has a nave with four bays, a rounded choir with a polygonal termination, a side tower on the north side of the choir, and a sacristy on the south side.

The former Saint-Martin church near the Ill was the mother church of Grentzingen, Henflingen, Oberdorf and Waldighoffen. The church organ is also part of the village’s history: François Antoine Berger rebuilt it in 1863, before Georges Schwenkedel completely reconstructed its instrumental section in autumn 1931.

Another architectural detail dates back to the period between 1798 and 1804. At that time, there were at least five carpenters in Grentzingen and neighbouring Ruederbach. Their buildings followed the rural architectural style of the 18th century, with an independent supporting structure for each residential level and symmetrically arranged timber.

Cycling and the Ill River

The Véloroute de l’Ill runs from Altkirch to Hippoltskirch in the Alsatian Jura and includes a section between Grentzingen and Henflingen. The route is 30 km long; the elevation gain is 140 m in the Hippoltskirch–Altkirch direction and 320 m in the opposite direction.

In the APP d’Illtal fishing area between Grentzingen and Oberdorf, fishing along the Ill is possible on the municipal territory of Grentzingen and Oberdorf. Only an annual permit is required for this fishing area.

Nature in the Ill Valley

A walk in the Illtal area leads to the forests of Grentzingen and into the Riesbach Valley.

At the edge of the forest, the walk offers panoramic views of the Ill Valley.
