Culture and history

A distinctive feature of Breitenbach-Haut-Rhin is the Chapelle de l'Archange-Mickaël, which is located in a hamlet in the middle of the forest. At the Chapelle de l'Archange-Mickaël, an earlier chapel dedicated to the archangel Mickaël dates back to the 18th century. The Chapelle de l'Archange-Mickaël is also associated with a local legend: a bell ringer located at the summit of Engelsberg was struck by lightning, causing the chapel bell to sink deep into the ground. A villager subsequently recovered the bell and placed it on the hamlet's religious building.

The Cimetière militaire allemand is located on Chemin Brechenmacher near Kraehenberg in Breitenbach-Haut-Rhin. It opened in December 1920 and contains the remains of 3,529 German soldiers from the First World War and 173 German soldiers from the Second World War.

Breitenbach-Haut-Rhin is one of the municipalities affected by the ZPS des Hautes Vosges / Haut-Rhin. The designation of the ZPS des Hautes Vosges / Haut-Rhin is justified by the presence of ten species listed in Annex I of Directive 79/409/EEC, the so-called Birds Directive.

The designated circular hiking trail “De Breitenbach à Breitenbach” is 55 kilometres long, classified as difficult, and begins in Breitenbach-Haut-Rhin.
