Culture and History
The present-day stone Sainte-Brigide Church in Berrwiller was built in 1766 to replace an older wooden church that had become dilapidated and too small. The former Sainte-Brigide Church served as a burial place for the Waldner de Freunstein family in the 15th and 16th centuries.
The Château de Weckenthal was rebuilt with two towers and restored and extended by Anastase de Waldner in 1522; it subsequently had four towers and was surrounded by a triple moat. The surviving remains form an incomplete square of sandstone walls that do not rise above ground level and are surrounded by a moat.
Typical of the 18th century, the Berrwiller presbytery was built in 1730 partly from stones taken from the Château de Weckenthal. The communal washhouse is also part of the local architectural history: it was built in 1885, its basins have been preserved, and water still flows into them from a captured spring today.

Paths and Landscape
The 7-kilometre circular trail “Sur les hauteurs de Berrwiller” is described as a family-friendly hike without any particular difficulties. It passes through forests and vineyards and offers views of the Vosges, Berrwiller and the Alsatian plain. The circular trail also allows visitors to discover remnants of the First World War and beautiful wayside shrines.
The starting point and destination of the “Sur les hauteurs de Berrwiller” circular trail are on the Route de la Forêt at the entrance to Hartmannswiller. Parking is available 500 metres farther on at the edge of the forest.
The 47th “Marche Populaire Internationale” offers routes of 5, 11 and 21 kilometres through the vineyards and along the eastern slope of the Vieil Armé.
Events
The annual Berr’Noël includes a Christmas market with local producers, craftspeople and associations.
The Humpafascht was scheduled to be held for the 47th time; it includes a Midsummer bonfire with fireworks and a “Marche gourmande”, a culinary walking tour. Berrwiller also hosts the recurring winter night hike “Marche Hivernale Nocturne”.
