Schleithal between village culture and paths into the surrounding area

Schleithal combines rural hills with a village center featuring traditional houses, farmsteads and distinctive churches. The landscape was shaped by many years of human activity; along the main road, the architecture reflects the village’s rural identity.

Churches and historical traces

With its tower and older structural elements, Saint-Barthélemy Church stylistically dates back to the late 15th century or, more likely, the early 16th century. The church contains two altarpieces from the side altars; they are classified as protected objects. The classification took place on June 28, 1972. The two altarpieces draw attention to the side altars and complement the tower and older structural elements with another part of the church interior. For visitors interested in culture, both the age of the building and the two classified altarpieces are therefore central features.

Schleithal’s historic horse market and its races were known for their quality. They were associated with the breeding of high-quality half-bred horses, which served riding, the military and carriage work.

Cithar and rural village character

The Protestant church was built as a combination of place of worship, school and teacher’s residence. Today, it hosts cultural and musical events, particularly those centered around the Cithar, a traditional Alsatian instrument. The Cithar thus adds a musical accent to the village’s cultural character.

The main road also contributes to the way Schleithal is perceived: traditional houses and farmsteads line its route. Together with the agriculturally shaped hills, they create a village landscape that conveys its rural character not only through historic buildings but also through the surrounding environment.

Hiking, cycling and Nordic walking

For exercise, the “Lignes de la Lauter” hiking trail provides a clear framework: it is 19 km long and takes about six hours. After Bienwaldmühle, it reaches Schleithal and passes through the village. A 19-kilometer route lasting around six hours requires a generous day-long schedule; the time spent in the village is part of the same hike. If you are planning a longer day of hiking, you can combine the hiking experience and the village center on this route as part of the same outing.

On the cycling loop “Circuit à vélo: des champs de bataille de 1870 au village le plus long d'Alsace,” a cycle path heads towards Schleithal and runs for approximately 3.5 km along the road before reaching the village. In addition, Nordic walking takes place in Schleithal on Mondays. For active days, you can therefore choose between a longer hike, a cycling stage and the Monday activity.
