Grandfontaine: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

At 1,009 m, the Massif du Donon is the highest point in the Lower Vosges. On the summit stands a successful pastiche of an ancient temple built under Napoleon III. The forest on the Donon can be accessed from Grandfontaine; Grandfontaine and other towns are served by the RD392.

Hiking Trails

The historic Circuit rando D04 circular trail begins at the military cemetery car park on the Donon and follows the southern fortified German defensive line of the Donon, which was built during the 1914–1918 war. The complete 11 km circular trail is fully accessible only from July to November.

The themed trail “Le Donon, montagne sacrée” begins at the Maison forestière du Haut Donon and is classified as moderately difficult. The archaeological discovery trail is also located on the Donon and is signposted with explanatory drawings.

The Circuit rando D05: Cascade de la Crache circular hiking trail begins at the Col du Donon and is 15 km long. The circular hike offers the opportunity to discover the Dolmen de la Hazelle and leads to the Cascade de la Crache.

Winter Sports

The ski area on the Donon has 40 km of signposted trails on five forest routes at elevations between 730 and 950 m. In summer, the ski area's trails can be used as mountain biking routes. Access to the ski area on the Donon is free.

History

The discovery of iron ore in the mountain led to the exploration and opening of iron mines in Grandfontaine-Framont.
