Bernardvillé lies at an altitude of 340 metres in a quiet valley between vineyards and meadows at the foot of the Ungersberg. Several signposted paths lead directly from the village streets through the vineyards or up to the ridges of the Ungersberg.

The Ungersberg can be reached directly from Bernardvillé and, at 901 metres, forms the highest point of the massif. The gradual ascent through the forest leads to views over the Alsatian plain, the Black Forest and the surrounding villages.

Since 1 September 1971, Bernardvillé has been listed as a protected landscape area.

Culture

The village church of Saint Antoine Ermite has been documented since 1371 and preserves Gothic windows from its medieval origins. It was rebuilt and extended in 1750; among other things, the choir was reconstructed, followed by a restoration in 1828. It also contains two Rococo altars, two retables and two statues; the sculptors involved are named as Johann Faller, Mathias Faller and Philippe Rauch. The organ was built in 1852 by the Stiehr-Mockers company and completely restored in 1984.

History

Notre-Dame de Baumgarten Abbey was founded in 1125 by Strasbourg Bishop Cunon de Michelbach. On 3 December 2009, after a 484-year interruption, it resumed monastic life, thereby restoring contemplative female Cistercian life in this valley.
