Nature

The Sentier des Roches is an isolated rocky area in the middle of the vineyards. It consists of granite blocks known as Dambach two-mica granite. The Rocher des Celtes is a hollowed-out rock with a bowl-shaped depression associated with Celtic legends.

On the vineyard paths around Dieffenthal, attentive walkers may discover particularly rich biodiversity. Numerous chapels also line these paths.

Hiking

The Sentier des Roches begins in front of Dieffenthal church and offers a short circular route marked with a blue ring, taking 45 minutes, as well as a longer circular route marked with a yellow ring. The Sentier des Roches is listed as taking two hours; the trail is open to everyone and is suitable for all levels of ability.

The circular trail “À l'assaut de l'Ortenbourg” is an easy hike from Dieffenthal to Ortenbourg, built in the 13th century. On the Sentier des Murailles et des Vignes, stones, low walls and fortification walls, castles, and winegrowers’ houses line the route as evidence of its history.

“Les mystères du vignoble: Dieffenthal” is a treasure hunt with clues placed along the route.

Culture

The Church of Saint Michael in Dieffenthal was built in the 18th century on the site of an older sanctuary and extended at the beginning of the 19th century. Its portal surround is completely decorated with volutes.

The tradition of Schieweschlauje, the throwing of burning discs, takes place every winter at the Rocher des Celtes, generally on the eve of the first Sunday of Lent.

Getting around

From Dieffenthal, visitors can cycle along the Alsace vineyard cycling route between vineyards and villages; the route is almost 140 kilometres long. Dieffenthal can be reached via a road or corresponding route suitable for buses.
