Culture and History

The Church of Saint George in Châtenois was built between 1759 and 1761; the bell tower of the former Romanesque church was incorporated into the new building. The bell tower is classified as a historic monument, while the nave and choir are listed as historic monuments.

The Sainte-Croix Chapel dates from 1709 and was originally associated with a pilgrimage. It has been listed as a historic monument since 29 October 2001; the protection does not include the south door or its canopy.

In Châtenois's fortified cemetery, the Tour des Sorcières is the only surviving tower of several. It is a Gothic gateway from the 15th century that was altered in 1830, and it recalls the witch trials held in Châtenois, during which several people accused of witchcraft were burned.

Festivals and Cycling Route

The Fête des Remparts takes place every year on the second weekend of June in the streets of Châtenois. Its programme includes discovering the cultural heritage and demonstrations of traditional crafts.

The Slow-Up takes place every year on the first weekend of June. Its route runs between Sélestat, Châtenois and Bergheim along the Alsace Wine Route and the Vineyard Cycle Route; it can be explored on foot, by bicycle or on roller skates.

Trails and Landscape

In the municipalities of Dieffenthal, Scherwiller and Châtenois, the Sentier des Murailles et des Vignes features 15 points of interest along three routes and offers walkers exceptional panoramic views of the Alsatian plain. The trail is not suitable for pushchairs or people with reduced mobility.
