The Protestant Church of Saint-Sixte is located in the centre of Buswiller. A document from 1438 provides evidence of its existence; since the Reformation was introduced in 1545, it has been reserved exclusively for Protestant worship.

Culture and History

The choir of the church contains six epitaphs of members of the Gayling von Altheim, Böcklin von Böcklinsau and Wurmser von Vendenheim families. They were spared the destruction of the Revolution of 1789 after Mayor Rueff had them covered with a layer of plaster. The church also contains six gravestones of the former lords of Buswiller, the Barons Gayling von Altheim.

The Corps de garde dates from 1597 and is the surviving relic of Buswiller’s former fortified cemetery complex. It once served as a guardhouse and housed a prison. The historic buildings also include the Ferme Jacob: the corner post of the residential building bears the date 1599, and it is also one of the few farmsteads protected as historic monuments.

A characteristic feature of the Schini houses is a double loggia with two levels of balustrades. The Schini houses reflect the architectural influence of the Swiss, who came to repopulate the region after the Thirty Years’ War from 1618 to 1648.

Townscape

Buswiller is located in the foothills of the Vosges at an average elevation of 225 metres. Benches line a green path by the school garden. The Eiler spring once supplied a fountain in the centre of the village. There is a car park by the Church of Saint-Sixte.

Experiences

La Ferme Buissonnière offers participatory activities for children, young people, families, people with disabilities, older people, associations, institutions and educational establishments; prior appointment is required. The programme also includes walks with animals, as well as cooking workshops, creative arts and crafts workshops, and traditional skills workshops.

The Association Sports et Loisirs Culturels organises a hike every year on 1 May along the paths in the region.
