Kokemäki: Timber Heritage, Moorland Trail and Sääksjärvi
Accommodation in Kokemäki
Kokemäki combines an impressive timber heritage with moorland trails, lake shores and river views. A particular landmark is the preaching house at the Chapel of Saint Henry: it is Finland’s oldest surviving wooden building. There are also historic sites in the centre and several ways to spend time outdoors. When looking for holiday accommodation, you can consider whether cultural history, nature trails or days by the water should be the focus of your trip.
A preaching house with a special history
During the Catholic period, the Chapel of Saint Henry was an important pilgrimage site. At the time, it was believed to have miraculous powers. The octagonal chapel that protects the preaching house was consecrated in June 1857. Two distinct periods of history can therefore be seen side by side here: the old wooden building and the chapel consecrated later. Those interested in religious history will find a tangible starting point here for learning about Kokemäki’s religious past.
Open-air museum and local history
The Kokemäen ulkomuseo open-air museum is near the town centre, on the road to Kauvatsa. It comprises 15 traditional buildings from Satakunta, relocated there in 1962–1963. One of the most significant is the main house from the Yli-Pälpälä farm, originally built in the village of Pälpälä in the 1790s. Granaries from Satakunta, a smoke sauna and a blacksmith’s workshop are also on the site. The relocated houses and outbuildings illustrate various aspects of traditional construction, with more to see than just a single building.
Other traces of culture can be found in very different places around Kokemäki. The sacristy of the Church of St Mary is a medieval stone sacristy dating from around 1540–1550. The Electricity Museum is housed in a former main transformer building from the early 1920s. Huovintie also has a historic route: it formed part of the medieval road from Turku via Ulvila to Ostrobothnia. From Orjapaadenkallio, the view extends across Satakunta’s cultural landscape, traversed by the Kokemäenjoki River.
Forest, moor and Sääksjärvi
The 1.6-kilometre Valkeajärvi nature trail runs partly through coniferous forest and partly across a moor, where it loops around a small moorland lake. There are no boardwalks anywhere on the moorland section; depending on the season and water levels, parts of the trail can be wet. At the rest area there is a lean-to shelter, a woodshed and a dry toilet. The changing trail conditions are a practical difference from a stroll in the centre and are worth taking into account when planning your visit.
Sääksjärvi was formed about 600 million years ago by a meteorite impact. Its shores offer beaches and boat parking and launching facilities. The western sections of the Sääksjärvi Route can be explored by canoe or on foot in summer. Several lean-to shelters with fire pits provide places to take a break and prepare meals. There is a toilet in the central area of Salonpää. The lake thus offers a variety of activities and useful places to rest; which ones suit your plans depends on how you would like to spend your day.
On foot in the centre and on winter trails
The shared section of the Siltojen-Reitti in central Kokemäki is about four kilometres long and can be covered at an unhurried pace on foot in approximately one hour. At Vuolteen Bridge, vehicles and pedestrians can cross the river; from there, views extend to the Vuolteen estate and upstream and downstream. The Orjapaadenkallio viewpoint offers a different perspective on the landscape.
The seasonal nature of some trails can also influence when you choose to travel. The Hiipireitti runs from Pitkäjärvi in Kokemäki to Hiittenharju in Harjavalta and serves as a cross-country ski trail in winter. The Pikkulaavu lean-to, with a shelter, toilet and firewood, is located along the route, 1.6 kilometres from the Pitkäjärvi leisure centre.
When looking for holiday accommodation, it helps to first decide what kind of daily rhythm you want: should historical sites and walks in the centre take priority, or the moor, lake shores and seasonal trails? Match the location of your accommodation to the activities that matter most to you. This makes it possible to plan your time in Kokemäki around your own priorities, rather than trying to fit all the different experiences into one trip.
