Lohja combines medieval culture with unusual insights into mining history and trails through protected nature. When planning your trip, you can therefore focus on different things: historic paintings and museum visits, explorations underground or time on nature trails. Which holiday apartment in Lohja suits your plans depends first on which of these aspects of the town you would like to discover.

Medieval Church and Vicarage Museum

Pyhän Laurin Church is Finland’s third-largest medieval stone church. Only Turku Cathedral and Naantali Abbey Church are larger. Written sources first mention the church in 1382; its paintings date back to the beginning of the 16th century. They make the church one of Finland’s most significant medieval cultural monuments. If you are interested in church art and history, this is a notable focus for your stay.

Lohja Museum is housed in an old vicarage, most of whose buildings date from the 19th century. The museum is about 450 metres from Pyhän Laurin Church via footpaths and cycle paths. You can therefore consider the church and museum as separate stops.

Tytyri: Geology and Mining Underground

The Tytyri Mine Experience takes visitors almost 100 metres underground. There, you can learn about geology and mining history. The exhibition covers these topics and also includes a changing art exhibition and a themed cave for families. This means the experience caters to several interests rather than focusing solely on mining.

At the Tytyri Mine Experience, self-guided visits are possible during opening hours; guided tours are also available. Groups can reserve their own guide. Lohja Museum is about 950 metres from the Tytyri Mine Experience via footpaths and cycle paths. If culture and history are important reasons for your trip when looking for a holiday apartment, these two places offer different points of reference for your planning.

Forest Trails and Nature Areas

On Lohjansaari lies the protected Paavola Oak Grove, a nationally significant deciduous forest area included in Finland’s national protection programme for deciduous forests. The Paavola Nature Trail runs through the oak grove and to the Paavola Oak, which is described as Finland’s most beautiful tree. The circular trail is just under one kilometre long, has 15 stops and takes about an hour. This makes it an easy-to-manage nature outing in its own right.

The Karkali Nature Reserve on the Karkalinniemi peninsula offers a different nature experience. The approximately two-kilometre-long Hanski-Hakki Nature Trail has ten stops providing information about the diversity of deciduous forest nature. There is also a network of hiking trails about six kilometres long, starting from the reserve’s car park and running through the area. For your outing plans, it is important to know that access is clearly regulated: you may travel only on foot or on skis, and only on marked trails, at rest areas and at the designated bathing beach. Leaving marked trails, travelling off-trail and landing elsewhere are prohibited without written permission from Metsähallitus.

Trails and Rest Areas in Karnaistenkorpi

Karnaistenkorpi is Lohja’s largest contiguous recreational area. Trails ranging from 2 to 7.7 kilometres run between tall rocky cliffs. They include a nature trail, a story trail for children, the Korkiamäki hiking trail and mountain bike routes. The selection ranges from a discovery route designed for children to options for hiking and mountain biking trips.

There is a lean-to shelter with a fire pit, firewood and cooking utensils on the shores of both Ahvenalampi and Sorvalampi; both shelters also have dry toilets. If you are mainly looking for nature and outdoor activities during your stay, these trails and rest areas can shape your choice of outings. Accordingly, when choosing a holiday apartment in Lohja, it makes sense to first decide whether culture, mining history or nature trails should define the character of your trip.
