Sammatti combines a distinctive cultural history with a landscape whose meadows have traditionally been maintained. Museums, historic buildings and seasonal events give the area its varied character.

Following in the footsteps of Elias Lönnrot

Paikkarin torppa is the birthplace of Elias Lönnrot, the compiler of the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala. The house has been used as a museum since 1887. Its furnishings, including furniture from the period when the house was built, connect this historic place with the family’s daily life: most of the furniture belonged to the Lönnrot family. Both Lönnrot’s origins and the history of the house are at the heart of a visit.

The Johannes Lohilampi Museum offers another glimpse into local history. Its collection consists mainly of objects from Sammatti and western Uusimaa. Most date from the late 18th to the early 20th century. The museum is located at Lohilampi’s former Rustholli, a historic cavalry estate. The present main building was completed in 1778. The collection and the building offer two distinct perspectives in time: objects from several generations and a house with a specific completion date.

Local history can also be encountered beyond the museums. Sammatti Church is one of Finland’s oldest wooden churches in continuous use throughout the year; the library is also among the oldest in the country. Sammatin lainajyvästö is a historic grain store belonging to the parish, dating from the second half of the 18th century. Together, these places show different aspects of the cultural heritage: religious life, community institutions, and the preservation of objects and buildings.

Landscape and seasonal experiences

Paikkarin torppa is set in the landscape by Lake Valkjärvi. Traditional meadow vegetation is maintained around the house. In summer, sheep graze on the lake’s shore meadows to keep the areas from becoming overgrown. This seasonal landscape management is as much a part of the area’s character as the meadows themselves. It offers a different way to experience Sammatti than the museums do: the focus here is not a single building, but the way the landscape is cared for.

The Paikkarin torppa grounds are also home to Sampomäki, a theatre stage managed by Sampo-yhdistys. Vaahterateatteri stages summer theatre performances there. Sampo-yhdistys also holds the traditional Sampojuhlat festival on the grounds every year. As the programme of performances and festivities may be important when planning your trip, it is a good idea to check the latest dates in advance.

Taidnavetta is the art gallery associated with the Johannes Lohilampi Museum and is available for hire for exhibitions and events. Sammatin lainajyvästö is also rented out by the Lohja Museum, mainly in summer, as an exhibition space. If you would like to plan your trip around an exhibition or event, check the relevant dates and programmes before making plans.

Culture, exercise and choosing a holiday rental

Other leisure facilities in Sammatti include a sports field built through voluntary work, a fitness trail and a disc golf course. These complement the cultural sites with opportunities to include physical activity in your stay. When choosing a holiday rental, it may therefore be helpful to consider whether you would prefer to spend your time at historic sites and events, or also enjoy the sporting facilities and landscape. All of these attractions are part of Sammatti’s local offering; check specific opening hours or event dates before planning your trip if needed.

Those interested in Lönnrot and Finnish cultural history will find a particularly personal connection at Paikkarin torppa. The Johannes Lohilampi Museum, the church, the library and the grain store broaden the view of the area’s history. In summer, these are joined by sheep grazing on the shore meadows of Lake Valkjärvi and seasonal theatre and exhibition offerings. These different highlights can help you decide whether Sammatti is the right destination for your stay and choose a suitable holiday rental for your trip.
